EAR SURGERY
- Reasons to have this surgery:
- Protruding ears are a congenital malformation of the outer ear. In addition to being a cause of suffering in childhood, this deformity can also significantly limit quality of life in adulthood.
- The surgical technique:
- The two most common ear malformations are the absence of an inner ear crease or an excessively flattened inner auricle. Both surgeries involve small incisions to the rear side of the ear. To treat the absence of an ear crease, a fine file is used to thin out the cartilage at a respective point. It is subsequently folded into the correct position using thin stitches. In the case of very large inner auricles, the excess cartilage is removed and the cartilage seam is then re-sutured.
- Procedure:
- The procedure lasts around 1 hour and is an outpatient surgery performed under local anaesthetic or twilight sleep. A special head bandage is worn for the following 4 days. The stitches are removed after 10 days. A headband must be worn at night for a total of 3 month to protect the ears.
